This past summer, we hosted our first ever event for Wavy Footy, for a Euro 2020 Watch Party in New York City in June of 2021. We collabed with The Ground NYC, one of New York City’s most unique and well-known football venues, to bring the Wavy Footy experience to a real world setting. This Chinatown spot has both an indoor and rooftop pitch, and a 1700 square foot patio accompanied with picnic benches and a 55-inch TV, making it the perfect place to have the event. TheGround helps capture New York in its fullest sense, as the sounds of the Q, N, B, and D trains on the bridge add to the NY ambiance.
The watch party was on June 19th, 2012, with Matchday 2 group stage games featuring: France vs Hungary (1-1), Germany vs Portugal (4-2), and Spain vs Poland (1-1). The tightness of the first and last match, along with the goal-fest between Portugal and Germany, created an exciting atmosphere as the build for this special tournament. The Germany vs. Portugal match was the highlight of the day, as a host of German fans pulled up to support their nation and brought stadium-level passion to the watch party.
Overall it was great to meet some of TheGround’s faithfuls and to invite a new crowd to a footy spot that some said have become their new favorite in NYC. We couldn’t have asked for a better first event. This first event was a great experience to be able to bring to life WavyFooty and those who have been supporting our wave. Euro 2020 was a huge highlight in summer 2021 as football always brings the world together. The momentum soon shifted from Manhattan as we continued to Brooklyn for our next event in 2021.
Recently, theGroundNYC had an amazing FIFA 22 design created for their rooftop pitch. This beautiful mural designed by Nina Chanel Abney was painted by Andrew Hurley, Doug Aldrich, and One Drop Sign Shop and has lit up the Chinatown area with its vibrancy.
TheGround, is not only a place to watch the beautiful game, but also to play footy weekly.
